almost a " mystery clock"( # 44 )

This clock is a type known as a "mystery clock", one where it might be difficult to understand what makes the hand/s move.

The clock movement is hidden in the lower part of the case and by a long axle or arbor; motion is given to a large ring, which "shows" the hours.

I would like to point out here that I made this clock as part of a project who’s main purpose is not a clock in the straight meaning of the word.

My contribution to this project has been to build a ring far from the movement and which makes one complete turn in twelve hours, the same as any normal hour hand on a domestic clock.

There is no provision for fitting a minute hand at this time.

Once the movement has been finished it will have a platform escapement for time keeping.

The drive to the hour ring is taken from a pinion on the centre arbor and then through a vertical arbor, which is hidden inside the vertical column.

At the top of the arbor is a crown wheel; this drives a small intermediate wheel, which in turn drives the hour ring.

To keep friction to a minimum, I have used ball races at the top and bottom of the column.

The main dial wheel has 240 teeth and they are .4 module, this wheel is quite heavy and again I have used ball races for support, they are placed either side of the plates (4o’clock and 7o’clock) and a 3rd bearing at 12o’clock keeps the ring in position.

I have not finished the parts to a high standard at the customer’s request; he felt that as the clock is hidden inside a case that it would not matter.
